Last Call for Lincoln Highway Buy-Way Sales

It is not too late to join in the annual Lincoln Highway Buy-Way! Anyone along or close to the Lincoln Highway is welcome to have a yard sale or a garage sale, anytime Thursday through Saturday, August 5, 6, and 7. Participants can join in for as little as $8, which includes a sign, a map and description on the Web site, and we will find your GPS coordinates for those driving. For those looking for clusters of sales, both Ashton and Fulton return to the Lincoln Highway Buy-Way with town-wide sales. The DeKalb Area Women’s Center at 1021 State Street returns with a parking lot sale Thursday through Saturday with indoor locations Friday and Saturday if it rains. Look for a vehicle representing the DeKalb Area Women’s Center and the Lincoln Highway Association Illinois Chapter President, Wayne Silvius, driving his award-winning antique car in the Lincoln Highway Parade on June 30th, at 7:00 p.m. in DeKalb.

The Lincoln Highway Buy-Way annual sale began in 2005 in Ohio and generated a conservatively estimated $10,000,000 to the local economy in Ohio last year, not counting individual sales. People from at least fourteen states visited Ohio’s sales in 2009. Sales for 2010 can be found along the Lincoln Highway in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. Begun in 1913, the Lincoln Highway was the first coast-to-coast improved highway. The Lincoln Highway begins in Times Square, New York City, travels through fourteen states, and ends over 3,389 miles later near the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco.

The $10,000,000+ Yard Sale

Yes, you read that right, the $10,000,000 yard sale. Last week at the Lincoln Highway Association annual conference in Dixon, one guest speaker was Mike Hocker, the Executive Director of the of the Ohio Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor, and one of the key organizers of the annual Buy-Way in Ohio. Mike, who says he does not like yard sales, estimates the annual Lincoln Highway Buy-Way Yard Sale brings in an extra $10,000,000 to the economy in Ohio, mostly for gas and lodging, without counting the yard sale profits themselves. Mike convinced the Ohio Department of Transportation to conduct three traffic counts during the yard sale last year. Compared to a ‘normal’ weekend, the traffic is up on yard sale weekend.

The first year, there were 250 sales in Ohio along the Lincoln Highway and it grew to around 1,000 yard sales last year. He and his wife traveled the length of the state, saying hello to as many of those hosting sales as possible. The Buy-Way in Ohio is a well-organized event that takes months of planning by volunteers, advertisers, businesses, and yard sale enthusiasts. An April edition of American Profile magazine which appeared in many of the Sunday papers all across the United States, featured an interview with Mike about the Lincoln Highway Buy-Way Yard Sale.

So many people come to Ohio from other states that Hocker and his group decided to move the annual event to so people can go to both the Highway 127 Corridor Sale and the Lincoln Highway sale.

In DeKalb, for those who do not have garage or yard space to hold a sale, the DeKalb Area Women’s Center will host space in their parking lot. For $5 a parking space, people can rent a parking space on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Call 815-758-1351 or e-mail dawc@niu.edu for more information. By the way, the Lincoln Highway Association Conference brought in approximately $60,000 to the local Dixon economy, just for hotel rooms, food, tour bus rental, and event costs. That does not include what conference participants spent on food and shopping themselves. The local hotel tax brought in an estimated $2,000+ to Dixon.

Farming Heritage of Franklin Grove is a tremendous support for the Lincoln Highway Association, especially for the use of the H.I. Lincoln Building for the National Tourism Headquarters. LHA member and Hobo Redbird Express comes to the Chaplin Creek outdoor museum on the third Tuesday of every August. If you have not attended one of these potluck suppers, you are missing out! The next one will be Tuesday, August 17th, 2010. Jack Kelley of Farming Heritage and many other organizations in Franklin Grove received an honorary hobo name at the annual event on Tuesday, August 18th, 2009.

In the summer of 2009, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the First Transcontinental Army Convoy (and the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln) with a coast-to-coast re-creation across the world's largest memorial to Lincoln, the Lincoln Highway. The Convoy passed through the City of DeKalb, Illinois on Saturday, June 20, 2009 and local online journalist Mac McIntyre captured some video footage as the vehicles rolled by. Thanks to the airport in Rochelle, three airplanes flew overhead to welcome the Convoy.

If you missed the PBS / WQED documentary, A Ride Along the Lincoln Highway it is not too late! You can order a copy on DVD from WQED here. They will start shipping on December 1st, so just in time for Christmas. And please, print off a page from the WQED Web site, take it to your local public library, and suggest that they purchase a copy.

The documentary covers something from all over the Lincoln Highway and LHA's own Brian Butko worked as the historian. It features an interview with Lynn Asp at the Headquarters in Franklin Grove and interviews with many of the LHA members who attended the Evanston, Wyoming conference. There are pictures of the school buses used for the Wyoming tour that everybody who went to the conference talked about afterward. The new, comfortable buses for the Utah west tour could not be used on the dusty, more rugged Wyoming east tour. The documentary has spectacular images as the Lincoln Highway crosses through some of the most beautiful areas in the United States.

The group Cornbread performing Lincoln Highway at Floodstock in July of 2008, a fund-raiser for victims of the horrible flooding in Iowa, especially Cedar Rapids. My bet is that someone recorded the video using a camera phone:

Surprise Number Two!

I wrote weeks ago about two surprises. The first one is that Cynthia Ogorek's book on the Lincoln Highway is coming out through Arcadia Press. Now I can tell you about the second surprise, the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb is getting an authentic Wurlitzer theater pipe organ, shipped out from Virginia. It is going to cost a mint to get it installed, but the theater originally had an organ, and after installation, the theater will become complete again. This future enhancement will complement the Rialto in Joliet and the Paramount in Aurora. This entire area already serves as a major representation of historic theaters, and that will just improve even more. I think there were just the four main types of theaters in the United States, Egyptian, Paramount, Rialto, and Fox. This area has three of those.

Today, March 1, 2008, is the 30th Birthday to an all volunteer group in DeKalb, the P.E.T. Inc. (Preservation of the Egyptian Theatre). Although DeKalb is infamous for tearing down the Old Post Office along Lincoln Highway, the preservation of the Egyptian Theatre is a success story, and it is one of the most photographed places along the Lincoln Highway (just two buildings off the route) in Illinois. Pontiac Turned Down for FEMA Money

Folks, I just heard on the news today that residents of Pontiac, which is on Route 66, as well as nearby Watseka which experienced flooding about a month ago because of ice jams on the river got turned down for assistance through FEMA. This blog's owner checked on the Route 66 Museum that is there, and it was OK: http://windycityroadwarrior.com/blog/2008/01/10/flooding-in-pontiac-illinois/
but many of the residents were hard hit, and getting turned down by FEMA is another blow. Trying to recover from flooding is extremely difficult.

This summer, on August 9, 10, and 11, the Lincoln Highway will become the World’s Fastest Growing Yard Sale. Stretching 586 miles communities across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia are invited to participate. Anyone in any of the communities along or close to the Lincoln Highway is welcome to have a yard sale, a garage sale, church rummage sale, or business sidewalk sale. Organizations are invited to have bake sales, car washes, or whatever else they would like to arrange. Car shows are welcome. Kids! Try your hand at a lemonade stand. This new annual sale began in 2005 in Ohio as the Lincoln Highway BuyWay. In 2006, Indiana linked with Ohio and for 2007, Illinois and West Virgnia will join for the first time.

Joliet Area Historical Museum

This picture is from Wayne Silvius and it is just one of many cool things at the Joliet Area Historical Musuem. They keep adding more exhibits. If you have never been, I recommend taking a trip. If you have not been in a year or two, it is worth checking out to see what is new!

The Joliet Area Historical Museum recently acquired a 1928 Lincoln Highway marker, one of the ones the Boy Scouts erected. That was thanks to the work of John Weiss. It was unveiled on November 11th, 2006, coinciding with the 80th birthday of Route 66. Road Dog has a story about the events that day on the American Road Magazine messages Web site.

Tentative May 12th: Joint Membership Meeting with the Iowa Chapter in Franklin Grove (probably Saturday, May 12th. I am waiting for 100% confirmation with the folks in Iowa)

June 18th-22nd: LHA National Conference in Fort Morgan, Colorado

Aug. 4th-5th: Franklin Grove Summer Harvest Festival

Aug. 9th-11th: Lincoln Highway Buy-Way Yard Sale

April Membership Meeting

Don Larson gave an informative talk and presentation on the Lincoln Highway and DeKalb parks for the April 22nd membership meeting held in the Alumni and Visitors Center on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Lincoln Highway Mural Dedication in Creston!

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 29th, there will be a new mural unveiling for the Lincoln Highway in Creston, Illinois at 10:00 a.m. The Village of Creston always has events on Memorial Day and this year, they celebrate their Sesquicentennial. So, there will be something special! First, at 10:00 a.m. there will be a Green Space dedication and right after that, there will be the Lincoln Highway Mural unveiling. It will be on the Fogleman Building and if I remember correctly, that building used to have a LH Mural on it.

Join the Illinois Lincoln Highway Association for a presentation by Don Larson on the history of the Lincoln Highway and parks, including the history of Annie's Woods, DeKalb's own link along this first transcontinental highway. Folks with vintage cars are welcome to bring them!

Those folks who would like to join us for lunch at Bakers' Square at noon before the presentation should RSVP to kayshelton@hotmail.com at least by around April 18th.

Following the lecture, there will be a membership meeting, goodies, and a drive to Annie's Woods, formerly an auto camp. There is one picture of the brand new building which just opened in October of 2005 in an online magazine:

For those interested in the history of DeKalb, Northern Illinois University, or hard-core LH fans, there are a few pictures of the Lincoln Highway that only a few people have seen before inside the book called Castle on a Hill.
